Silat is the martial art of the Malay people. A martial art with 'external' and 'internal' aspects, it teaches self defense, physical conditioning exercises, breathing and meditation, martial combat as well as artistic musical performance.
Silat is a great way of increasing physical fitness, flexibility, and mental conditioning, where the skills learned are directed towards combating ones aggression and developing self control, discipline and respect.
Real Silat Melayu is a state of being rather than an activity that one does, and demands the refinement and shaping of ones character combining physical, mental and spiritual training. It is for this reason that the style is best defined by its chain of authority through its gurus, rather than by geography or technical rationale, as the ability to utilize the keys to the system are dependent upon the basis & level of the authorization one has been given.
